The only way we can know sadness is because of happiness. The only way to identify despair is because we have felt joy. We feel grief in all its levels of depth because we have known love in equal measure. Our Heavenly Father created us to live in His love, meaning also to feel it ourselves and subsequently show it to the world around us. Sin brought about opposition to God and all of His attributes that are poured out upon His creation in infinite measure. People make the mistake of holding God accountable for painful emotion, but the truth is we can only know difficulty exist because we know the attributes of God, which He frames the world with. Emotions are difficult to pin down with precision because of their precarious nature. They come and go, change from one extreme to another and even express themselves in different ways to free us of the build up inside our broken hearts. All of us will grieve because we love. That grief may be frustration when a loved one acts out or falls short of their potential. That grief may be despair when a prodigal loved one creates distance in the relationship. That grief may culminate and reach its most painful potential when we lose a person we have loved. We use the heart as an image of love’s source. Like a heartbeat on a monitor the highest peaks of love have the potential to be met with the lowest valley of grief. The key word is potential. The potential pain can be met with the power of our creator.
The first position is to honor God for knowing His love so that we are capable of receiving and giving love among each other. The loss of love we are grieving was a joy God gave to us. Our love is given to mortal beings that belong to God and are provided for His purpose, for His Kingdom and then to us. When our purpose from God is fulfilled, we are called home to be with the Father. None of us know when that purpose might be fulfilled and when we get to return where we belong in Heaven. Part of our purpose is to love and be loved by the people God gives us. Although we mourn a loss, we can praise God in equal measure for the time we had in His purpose and the changes that love made to the world. If you lose a close friend, how many people were touched by the loving moments that poured into the world through you two? If you lose a child, how many lives were touched through that child’s life and your relationship? If you lose a spouse, how many people were touched by your time together and by the children that union produced if God blessed you with that parenting duty? If that’s the case the physical expression of your love will continue for generations.
Emotions defy logic so in the deepest depth of struggle we have to hand the hardship to the only person begging to take it from you. Your Heavenly Father wants to take your burdens, your pain, and your hardship. He has an open hand ready to receive, but you have to be willing to hand it to Him. This is done through faith, trust, and prayer. Faith that God is who He says He is. Trust that He is the perfect Father looking to ease the pain of His children if they will lean on Him, and prayer which is the relationship component that God ask you to communicate at all times with Him. Ask Him to relieve you, believe he not only will but desperately wants to, and open your hold on the emotions. Let God heal you from the inside and acknowledge the small steps He takes with you as He holds you in His hands. God not only calls His children home but comforts the loved ones that still have a purpose here in His earthly Kingdom. Rejoice in His provision meaning both the times you had with your love and also the new kind of love you get to experience, when the source of all love takes you into His arms. Seek His face and feel the comfort of perfect and everlasting love.
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him…We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:16,19)
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation 21:4)
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28)
