When studying the Bible we find verses that jump out and call to us. Many readers of the Word skim through the scripture as a story to hear and miss the callings. It could be a verse, phrase or simply a single word that gives us pause. What an amazing opportunity to feel the pull of God toward what He has for you. Be encouraged that this calling of God is an invitation to go deeper with Him. We can use the example below to act as an example and an encouragement of how rewarding walking with God in His Word can be.
John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
The verse above from the Gospel of John tells us that the truth will lead us to sanctification and the Word of God is the truth. The Word of God is not only the written word of the Bible but also the Word made flesh in the life of Jesus, and the Word written on our heart at salvation through the Holy Spirit. Let’s look at a few verses that describe the Word and how these additional verses can be used to open up God’s message to His children.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness
Using the verse above we are sanctified through teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness from our time spent in the Bible. This shows the importance of knowing about God and being transformed by His Word. Being sanctified in our seeking of the most high. We see the ways the power of the messages from God in the Bible can be used to grow us in spiritual maturity. How many other ways is spending time in God’s Word profitable?
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Using Hebrews above we find sanctification as a process that is living and active just like the Word. We possess in our Bible the Word of God that grows us and grows with us. As we mature in the understanding of scripture, the words open up as deeper and deeper meaning is revealed. This deeper understanding is us drawing closer to God and Him drawing closer to us.
John 8:31-32 If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
In John above, written before the initial verse, we find freedom in sanctification. We are set free from the chains of sin and the penalty of death at salvation. Through sanctification we are set free from the power of sin and the pull of the flesh. We develop Godly wisdom and begin to understand the things of God that transcend the fallen wisdom of man. As disciples of Jesus we walk in step with His leading and show the world what a life devoted to Christ looks like. Study His Word, understand His truth, be His disciple.
1 Peter 1:23 Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.
Finally for this discussion but far from complete in the amount of depth we can gather through further study; we find that the gifts of salvation and sanctification are imperishable because they are of God. The truth of God is eternal and imperishable, just as we are after adoption into the Father’s Kingdom. We are born again into this new eternal life and that new life is fueled by God’s Word. The Bible will encourage us to be brave and faithful in the trials that come from a life that overcomes the evil of this world. God is our refuge and abiding in Him, seeking Him, provides strength through understanding the deeper things of eternity.
The Word of God is the most powerful force we can experience. The Word of God, when spoken created the universe and everything in it. It calmed storms and parted seas. The Word became flesh and became the perfect source of our salvation and justification. It reunited us with God and rescued us from walking without the gift of His Spirit. The Word written on our hearts connects us to God at all times, so He is personal to us always. The same Word on the hearts of apostles cast out demons, spoke new languages, and prophesied the coming works of God. Be humbled by the power you hold in your hand. Be grateful God trusts you to receive its blessings. Read it as more than a story. It’s God talking directly to you. Seek Him in His Word and receive what He has for you. Take the time to feel pause when a message grabs you. Seek the word, phrase or verse that grabs at your attention. Sit with it and see what God has to say to your Spirit. Seek confirmation and depth in the other verses to go deeper. The full depth of His Word is infinite, but the deeper you go the clearer your Heavenly Father becomes in your heart.
