What Kind of Grace do You Require?

What kind of Grace do you require from God? Grace is usually skimmed over as a blanket term that conveys blessing. There is no argument that God does bless His children freely, and that the resulting provision in all its forms can be summed up with as grace. The definition of grace for your consideration is: the unmerited favor of God, freely given without prerequisite. Common grace refers to the blessings that God bestows on all of mankind regardless of their spiritual standing before Him, while saving grace is that special blessing whereby God sovereignly bestows unmerited divine assistance upon His elect for their regeneration and sanctification. Grace is the revelation of who God is to creation. God is the same always and the revelation of Himself as grace is poured out on all creation, at all times. How it is received and what form it is required to be given lies in the hands of man. Think of God as the sun and His grace are the rays emitted over all the earth. The sun is always there and the light shines on everyone, but some people choose to stay indoors or sit in the shade. They hide from what is available although God and what He is always willing to give. Believers are receptive to the Father and given specific forms of grace beyond saving grace to guide them in their walk with God. We can call this sanctifying grace. Grace that leads to Christlikeness. This grace is specific to the believer’s needs in terms of situation, gifting, and usability of their heart in the Kingdom. “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.” – Ephesians 4:7

That being said, let’s circle back to the opening question, assuming your heart belongs to Lord Jesus and salvation is yours through faith and submission. What kind of grace do you require from God? This question is meant to cause reflection in your heart, with input from the indwelling Holy Spirit. We see grace described in many ways Biblically and summed up as God revealing Himself. Its individual ways of expression can show you what God is revealing to you through His grace. Grace can be a gift of provision as well as a message of inspiration. Grace is described as corrective and encouraging. It can bring the Christian walk back to the right path and also revitalize the path that is already being walked in righteousness. Does the grace God gives you come mostly as conviction and redirection, or blessings to continue seeking Him? Be very clear that grace comes from the everlasting and unfailing love of God. Not a feeling but who He is. God loves everyone the same because it can be no other way. The light of the son shines on all man. How does your seeking of God require that He show His love to you? Does your self-reliance cause Him to love you through conviction, or is your pursuit of righteousness met with blessing and encouragement? Think of a parent with two children, one who walks outside of parental boundaries and another set on guidance and obedience. The parent loves their children equally but the individual ways of conveying that love must be different to prosper the children.

Examples of grace can be correction, conviction, protection, and redirection OR provision, healing, peace, joy, and blessing. All of these are God’s love in action, poured out without ceasing for us to flourish. We will all receive these at God’s discretion at different stages of our walk. Bit search yourself and ask, does my self-sufficiency, my self-focus, and my level of obedience require certain forms of grace over others? Ask God in prayer to search you and reveal how powerful your purpose is and what you have been called for. Seek God’s face in righteousness and allow grace to push you forward, instead of redirecting you needlessly in self-righteousness. Allow God to break down the fleshly desires inside you and overcome your sinful nature with His Spirit. Read and pray over the verses below. See how God’s grace is revealed and what kind you require from the Father of perfect love.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:8-12

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:18-19

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16

The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more. Romans 5:20

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. Ephesians 1:7-8

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1

And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Corinthians 5:15
