What is anti-Christ?

When people hear the word anti-Christ, they imagine a person as described in Revelation. Even non-believers know the implication of the anti-Christ. With that amount of reverence being applied to the word, is that all it means?

First, take a look at what “anti” means in a little more depth. The Strong’s Concordance number is 473 for reference. The definition of the prefix ‘anti’ is attached to words to describe something that is:

  • Against (an antidote works against a poison)
  • Opposing / Opposite of (an antonym is the opposite of a word)
  • In place of (anti is used in Greek for the phrase “an eye for an eye”)
  • Counteracting / Contradicting (an antibiotic counteracts harmful bacteria)

With these definitions in mind the ‘spirit of anti-Christ’ is anything that is:

  • against Jesus and His Gospel (John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.)
  • opposes the message of Jesus (John 14:6 I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me)
  • takes the place of Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man is Christ Jesus)
  • contradicts the message of Jesus (Acts 4:11-12 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”)

Jesus was God sending salvation and justification to His chosen; creating a New Covenant based on faith, mercy, and grace found through His Son. The rejection of Jesus is the rejection of God Himself. The spirit of anti-Christ is not only against Jesus but also the Father because Jesus and the Father are One. John 10:30 “I and the Father are one”

Denial of Jehovah the Father, His Son Jesus, and His Spirit are anti-Christ. Any person that acts against God and His Kingdom are anti-Christ. Anything that takes the place of Jesus in the life of a believer is anti-Christ. It is important that God’s children are aware of the spirit of anti-Christ and the many forms that it takes to drive them off of the path God has for them. The world is full of darkness and evil that opposes God. There are other faiths that oppose Jesus as the Messiah and fight to destroy His offer of adoption into God’s Kingdom. Be vigilant as the spirit of anti-Christ roams around like a lion looking to devour believers as they mature in sanctification. This spirit will culminate in the appearance of the anti-Christ of Revelation that will deceive many who think Jesus has returned. Believers who pursue the relationship with God He calls them to will know the Father, they will know the love of His Son, and be filled with His Spirit. They will not be deceived by the spirit of anti-Christ and will walk in the light of Jesus away from the evil and deception that hides in the darkness. Do not put the anti-Christ spirit in a box with limitations as not to be caught off guard. Examine your heart, your life, and your beliefs to see there is not stronghold for anything except Jesus and His love.

1 John 2:22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

1 John 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

Characteristics of the Spirit of the Antichrist (Biblehub.com with modifications)

1. Denial of Jesus’s Divine Nature (Jesus was a person but not Lord)

A core sign is a refusal to acknowledge Jesus Christ as divine Son and Messiah. Those who proclaim Jesus only as a teacher or prophet, without affirming His eternal divine nature, manifest the spirit of antichrist.

2. Rejection of the Incarnation

The idea that Jesus took on actual human flesh is central to Christian doctrine. Denials of His real humanity, or any claim that He was not fully God and fully man, reflect a fundamental refusal of Christ’s unique personhood.

3. Undermining the Work of the Cross (rituals or acts outside the Scripture)

The spirit of antichrist diminishes or dismisses the necessity and sufficiency of Jesus’s sacrificial death and resurrection. Whether stating He never truly died or that His resurrection was non-literal, such teachings undercut the heart of the gospel.

4. Encouraging Idolatry or False Submission (self-righteousness / personal truth)

This spirit promotes worldview systems where humanity or created things usurp God’s rightful place, either directly contradicting biblical truth or subtly steering hearts away from exclusive devotion to Jesus.

5. Counterfeit Signs and Manifestations (occult, mediums, spirits) Scripture warns of false wonders performed to deceive. If such occurrences deny, twist, or minimize Christ’s person and work, they align with an antichrist posture.
