Apostle – Seek to Understand

It’s more common for people to reject what they do not understand instead of trying to learn and develop deeper understanding of difficult topics. As you read through the Gospel of John you see where Jesus attempts to explain the deeper truths of the Kingdom and His disciples do not understand. They say: John 6:60b This is a hard saying; who can listen to it. Then the same chapter describes: John 6:66 After this many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him. Imagine Jesus traveling from place to place with His apostles and gathering disciples as He performs miracles and healings. Everyone wants to be around the teacher and all of the wonders. Then Jesus begins to explain what following Him and becoming a part of His earthly ministry entails and people turn away. It doesn’t fit their expectation of a Savior and is too difficult to understand. They reject what they do not understand or what has now become difficult and fall back into the darkness. They run away from the light of the world.

This is where loving Jesus and having a relationship with Him and His Church become important. When Jesus asks the apostles if they intended to turn away like the rest they have the best response. John 6:68-69 “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” You very quickly realize the difference in following the idea of Jesus and knowing who your Savior is. The apostles did not turn away but sought to understand the difficult things. They knew Jesus and trusted that His way was right even if they did not fully understand.

We have the blessing of God’s Word in our hands in the Bible. We can look and see how all of the Old Testament pointed to the coming Messiah and how all of the prophecy pointed to Him specifically. We also have the opportunity to be surrounded by like minded members of the body of Christ with whom we can learn and discover the greatness of our Heavenly Father. He calls us into community to understand the difficult things: Colossians 2:2-3 My goal is that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and knowledge, of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The ways of God are above our ways and His understanding above our capabilities. I find it comforting that God is so amazing and beyond my comprehension that I will never fully understand Him. His Glory will always be incomprehensible. I have been drawn to the Father, by the Father, through Christ my Savior to learn more everyday as He work in me and through me to spread His kingdom. We seek to understand and we find more of Him, we knock and He opens the door to more of Him. Find comfort in not understanding and run toward Him, do not turn away as the disciples did. Have the heart of an apostle and give it fully to God.
